Blue Paper on Data Management published for public consultations

e-IRG has published a Blue Paper on data management that provides an assessment of Europe’s e-Infrastructure service portfolio, and identifies the opportunities and challenges involved.
The Blue Paper reports on current trends and issues and sets out policy recommendations for several key areas, especially for ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) projects. E-Infrastructure tools and resources must be developed in a global context to support researchers’ global endeavours.The Blue Paper identifies the most important areas of data mangement addressing following topics:
• Data e-Infrastructure by Peter Wittenburg, Damien Lecarpentier, Norbert Meyer
• Reliability and Replications by Johannes Reetz, John Kennedy, Maciej Brzezniak
• Metadata by Gera Pronk, Daan Broeder
• Unified Access and interoperability by Angelos Bilas
• Security by Steven Newhouse, Sergio Andreozzi
with contribution from e-IRG Data Management task force.

ESFRI invited the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group to produce a report, on e-Infrastructure services and Data Management, enabling more efficient e-Infrastructure support for the science that is done by the ESFRI projects. The blue paper is now ready for consultation and can be downloaded here:

SIENA @ US NIST Cloud Computing Forum and Workshop V, June 5-7, Washington, DC

At the NIST’s fifth Cloud Computing Forum & Workshop held in Washington, DC, Alan Sill Senior Scientist at Texas Tech University and Vice President of Standards, Open Grid Forum (OGF), gave a presentation on behalf of the SIENA Roadmap Editorial Board covering the SIENA Roadmap on Distributed Computing Infrastucture for e-Science and Beyond in Europe, its final results as well as the SIENA Calls for Action.
The US NIST Cloud Computing Forum and Workshop V was a two day forum event followed by a 1-day hands-on Workshop focused on supporting collaboration the NIST Cloud Computing program and USG Cloud Computing Technology Roadmap initiative with external stakeholders.

Workshop Interoperability In Action - Standards Implementation in VENUS-C & in the context of the SIENA Roadmap @ OGF35 , June 17-19, 2012, Delft, Netherlands

The aim of this session is to showcase the experience SIENA Initiative shared with VENUS-C through the example of the VENUS-C standards implementation for interoperability and the including active contribution to EGIs Federated Cloud Test Bed (CDMI proxy and resource provision) while demonstrating the relevance of established OGF protocols in cloud infrastructures with extensions to OGF-BES.
The session features an interoperability demo, concluding with an interactive panel debate offering insights into the current core suite of high-level cloud standards, real-world interoperability testing, current efforts around federation and possible paths to achieve consensus on standardisation through the SIENA Roadmap.
Presenters include Andrea Manieri, Engineering; Daniele Lezzi, BSC, Ilja Livenson, KTH, and Kanchanna Ramasamy Balraj, Engineering.

"Reaching Consensus in Distributed Computing Standardisation – The SIENA Initiative" was the title of the the presentation held by David Wallom, OERC at the EuroCloud Deutschland Conference: Ready for the Digital Future held on 23 May 2012 in Cologne, Germany.
The conference was focused on discussing major trends in Cloud Computing: interoperability, innovation and internationalisation. The conference welcomed IT consultants, sales partners, and providers of Cloud Services.
Listed as the conference highlights: a video message by Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Union, and Forrest Lin, Director of the Cloud Computing Sector of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, joining the conference online to share interesting insights into the development of the Asian, especially the Chinese, cloud market.

Cloud interoperability Workshop @ Future Internet Assembly (FIA), May 10-11, Aalborg

The Cloud Interopeability Workshop was held during the first Future Internet Assembly (FIA) of 2012, held in Aalborg on May 10-11 and focused on the evaluation of the state of uptake of existing interoperability solutions, exposed some of the latest innovations in the field, and identified several gaps in research and developments that should be filled in the future.
The session covered a wide arena of cloud interoperability challenges: at both IaaS and PaaS layers, network level, integration issues pertaining to the Internet of Things initiatives, and finally, the large mosaic of standards groups and their focus, of which SIENA was in the best position to push the message of open standards, direct participation and the setup of more formal interfaces between working groups - several recommended actions of the SIENA Roadmap.
