SIENA NIST SIENA’s objectives are complementary to the role of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in cloud standards, guidance and technology. NIST partners with the EC and SIENA specifically in these areas. SIENA & NIST have developed a working relationship to help exchange efforts in common needs, recommendations and next steps.

DCI projects

SIENA aims to break down the interoperability barriers that impede the pervasive use of grids and clouds by driving co-ordination between national and pan-European e-Infrastructure initiatives, recently funded Distributed Computing Infrastructure projects, policy bodies, as well as enterprises, with an eye to evaluating and responding to specific needs.

The Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) projects are those Research & Technological Development projects which were retained for funding under the DG Information Society and Media Capacities Call, Nov. 2009,GÉANT and e-Infrastructure Unit.

European Desktop Grid Initiative
Deploying Desktop Grid (DG) and Cloud Computing services for the European Grid Initiative (EGI) research user communities in Europe that require large-scale distributed computing resources for multi-national projects.
Integrated Sustainable Pan-European Infrastructure for Researchers in Europe
Establishing the pan-European grid infrastructure by drawing on the achievements of earlier European initiatives and with the support of the national grid organisations. The central organisation,, will provide a co-ordinating hub for European DCIs, working to bring existing technologies into a single, integrated production e-Infrastructure for researchers in Europe.
European Middleware Initiative
EMI is a close collaboration between major European distributed middleware providers, ARC, gLite, UNICORE and dCache.
Initiative for Globus in Europe
IGE aims to support and enhance the provision of Globus Grid software to European e- Infrastructures.
Enhancing Grid Infrastructures with Virtualization and Cloud Technologies
StratusLab aims to enhance Grid infrastructures with Cloud Computing by incorporating virtualisation and cloud technologies into existing Grid infrastructures in Europe while improving the usability of distributed computing resources.
Virtual multidisciplinary EnviroNments USing Cloud Infrastructures
VENUS-C aims to develop and deploy an industry-quality cloud computing service for research and industry communities in Europe.
