SIENA NIST SIENA’s objectives are complementary to the role of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in cloud standards, guidance and technology. NIST partners with the EC and SIENA specifically in these areas. SIENA & NIST have developed a working relationship to help exchange efforts in common needs, recommendations and next steps.

LATEST NEWS: Interviews with Cloudscape III international experts

Registration covered two-days of presentations and Round Tables led by international experts, developers and users, the launch of the first iteration of the SIENA European Roadmap on Grid and Cloud Standards for e-Science and Beyond, a Welcome Cocktail sponsored by Microsoft Research with demos, networking lunches and coffee breaks, along with a special set of resources for attendees.

Cloudscape III was the perfect opportunity for experts, developers and end-users in the cloud computing space to become part of the cloud standards process. The event was the culmination of 8 months hard work by SIENA of delivering both an invigorating and stimulating agenda. A series of Cloud computing use-cases showcasing best practices and challenges were presented at Cloudscape III by some of the leading bodies and projects from Europe and USA.

Cloudscape III is co-sponsored by the UK e-Science Engineering Taskforce Network (Platinum sponsor) and by TClouds (bronze sponsor)

Cloudscape III – A Snapshot

"In a fast changing world with citizens and organisations, governments and other communities joining up services across Europe and the wider world, the advent of Web 2.0 and Cloud computing, interoperability becoming ever more the key to success, and financial pressures making it necessary to get the best possible value for money from the public purse, it is eminently sensible for the eGov and research communities to look for the maximum amount of synergies to achieve their respective objectives"
John Borras, Independent Consultant,OASIS and SIENA Roadmap Co-chair

Cloud computing is expected to play a key role in the digital economy of the future in Europe and beyond. To ensure European citizens gain real benefits from the cloud, it is essential that we address legal and institutional barriers as well as technical challenges such as interoperability. To this end an EU-wide strategy for 2020 has been established by the EC Digital Agenda.

Science, eGovernment, privacy & legal issues, security, interoperability: Cloudscape III addresses the main key aspects of cloud computing for the benefit of the users through dedicated sessions:
  • Interoperability Keynote presentations: 15 March 9:25 – 10:30
Introducing the SIENA Roadmap, SDOs landscape and Cloud Computing Interoperability use cases, with presentations from Martin Antony Walker, SIENA, Vincent Franceschini, Hitachi Data Systems and Gregg Brown, Microsoft.
  • Cloud computing for Scientific Research User communities. 15th March 11:00 – 12:30
Guy Coates, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, and Ake Edlund, ECEE, will be two of the speakers who will debate potential interoperability of cloud computing infrastructures for BioTechnology and ECEE user communities, chaired by Steven Newhouse, EGI, director
  • Public Services and eGovernment use cases & Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) Use Cases, 15th March 14:00 – 16:00
An afternoon of presentations will examine how eGovernment and DCI projects can collaborate for mutual benefit. Presentations on EC perspectives from Jean François Junger, European Commission Head of Sector Govt & Enric Mitjana, GÉANT and eInfrastructure Unit, European Commission; G-Cloud and DCI projects EGI-Inspire, StratusLab and VENUS-C.
  • Tackling legal, policy & ethical issues around Cloud computing, 16th March 9:00 - 11:00
Vincent Franceschini, Hitachi Data Systems & SNIA will chair a session where legal and ethics experts, Luciano Floridi, Oxford University; Tim Cowen, OCA and lawyer Paolo Balboni will discuss data privacy, security, and the legal side of portability data migration, mashup and facilitation.
  • Security issues and Cloud. 16th March, 11:30 – 13:00
Dawn Leaf NIST; Elmar Husmann, IBM; Neil Robinson, RAND Europe; and Jens Jensen, STFC; will give their views on security aspects of cloud computing
  • Building a Consensus on Cloud Roundtable 16th March 16:00 – 17:30
EC, DCI, NIST, eGovernment representatives will discuss next steps for the SIENA Roadmap

Cloudscape III is organized by the EC-funded project SIENA which supports Europe’s Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) initiatives and the European Commission in working towards the delivery of a future e-Infrastructures roadmap that will be aligned with the needs of European and national initiatives.

This is the third in the series of Cloudscape workshops. Cloudscape I - Exploring the cloud computing landscape and the impact of cloud computing on enterprise IT - took place in January 2008 and was followed by Cloudscape II - Advances in European e-Infrastructures - in February 2009.
